Global Empowerment Mission

There are so many other stories, like the chap who wrapped his arms around a palm tree, in one hand he held onto his child, in the other his mother. They were there for hours as the storm ravaged around them. Clinging on until a length of plywood struck this chap with such force that his arm was sliced off and washed out to sea, carrying with it the man’s mother, still desperately holding onto her son’s hand. The man and his child survived.

In Nassau I saw the ’shelters’ where displaced people are now being housed. There are hundreds upon hundreds of evacuees there. Stuffed into a gymnasium. There is no privacy for any women. No schooling for any child. No clean water to wash in.  Somewhere along my own journey of trying to fundraise and bring awareness to the aftermath of the hurricane I met Michael Capponi. Michael knows a lot about disaster relief and as I knew a bit about the Bahamas it made sense that we collaborated. He was the founder of a disaster relief agency called Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) who very quickly responded to the urgent needs of Abaco.

In one of these photographs I am sitting in the Treasure Cay airport terminal. Yes, it’s only a tent. The airport was blown over in the hurricane. My tee shirt says it all. #thisisacrisis

On the back it says @globalempowermentmission.
I am honored to have been invited to sit on their advisory board.
